Arguably Spain’s most famous wine region, Rioja is located in the north of the country and is best known for its Tempranillo-based red wines. Our latest Tasting Highlights features nine Riojas that scored 90 points or more on our 100-point scale. Even better, they're all priced $40 or less.

Historically, oak aging, particularly with American oak, is a hallmark of traditional winemaking in Rioja. One of the region's labeling systems classifies wines based on the length of time they've been aged in oak and bottle prior to release.

This group of wines includes Bodegas Sierra Cantabria's Rioja Reserva 2017, one of the top scorers, which shows dark fruit, iron and herb notes. Read on to get our score and full expert tasting note for this amazing Rioja and eight others.

Tasting Highlights' wine reviews are fresh out of the tasting room, offering a sneak peek of our editors' most recent ratings—including scores and full tasting notes—to WineSpectator.com members.
