Exploring U.S. West Coast white wines beyond the well-known Chardonnay can be rewarding and stimulating. In every corner, one can find a unique expression of something familiar growing in an unfamiliar place. This week's Tasting Highlights features a mix of white grapes, including Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris, Vermentino and more from lesser-known regions in Northern California and Oregon. You'll also find more familiar California grapes in this lineup, like Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier.
Troon Vineyards has more than 50 years under its belt in Rogue Valley, in southern Oregon. Dick and Virginia Troon planted their first vines in 1972 and made their first vintage four years later. Today, under new ownership, Troon is a leader in regenerative farming and has received the Regenerative Organic Gold Certification (worldwide, only four wineries are "Gold" recipients). For its Vermentino, winemaker Nate Wall uses grapes from the nearby Applegate Valley, a subregion of Rogue Valley. This white is made using full malolactic fermentation, and it shows vibrant grapefruit, lime and saline notes that glide on the finish.
This lineup features Myka Cellars' Sauvignon Blanc Lake County 2023, an exuberant and mouthwatering wine with lemon and floral notes. Read on to get our score and expert tasting note for this fantastic U.S. West Coast white wine and seven others.
