“The mind’s instinct is to really overprepare,” Tony-winning actor and legendary comedian Martin Short told TV host Conan O’Brien in 2023, “but that overpreparation gives you this confidence, not just that you’re going on with something [good], but also, for me, it’s tied to this idea that if I bomb, I’ll still be able to go out and have a glass of wine to celebrate, because I did everything I could.”
“You just want that wine is all you want!” laughed O’Brien, no stranger to working with wine lovers.
Happily, Short knows where to get a great glass of wine when it’s time to celebrate, and he recently joined vintner Kathryn Hall for some of his longtime favorite Hall wines at her newest tasting room and lounge, in Palm Springs, Calif.
The Only Murders in the Building star is well-acquainted with the lineup of wines from Hall (as well as its sister labels, Walt and Baca), having previously joined Hall on her Virtual Happy Hour conversations.
In January, Hall and Short reunited in Palm Springs for a tasting and to film the premiere episode of Kathryn & Friends, a new in-person video interview series starring Hall and some of her wine-loving celebrity fans. More than 300 episodes of Hall’s Virtual Happy Hour were recorded, and in addition to multiple appearances from Short, Hall’s guests included Jimmy Kimmel, Tina Fey, John Leguizamo, Tori Spelling, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and many more.
But Short got more than just a glass of his favorite 2019 Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley when he visited the newest of Hall’s six tasting rooms: Palm Springs Mayor Ron deHarte was on hand to proclaim Jan. 4 as Palm Springs’ official Martin Short Day. Our spies report that Short was both overprepared and ready to celebrate!
